In the spirit of last season’s collaboration with San Francisco’s skateboarding community, pianist and Resident Artistic Director Jason Moran presents another inventive setting for his music that breaks down barriers between jazz and other artistic disciplines, brilliantly showing how they can intersect and create sublime new forms of expression. For this uproarious night, Moran’s Bandwagon band with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits are joined by three of the brightest lights in standup comedy, Faizon Love, Marina Franklin and Keith Robinson. Actor and comic Faizon Love has headlined comedy clubs and theaters across the country, appearing on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam and IFC’s Dinner For Five. He co-starred on director Robert Townsend’s popular sitcom The Parent ‘Hood for four seasons and gained stardom for his role as Big Worm in F. Gary Gray and rapper Ice Cube’s blockbuster comedy, Friday. Marina Franklin is a buzz-worthy young comic who has appeared on The Jay Leno Show, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and on Comedy Central with The Daily Show regular John Oliver. She has recently been selected by comedian Wanda Sykes to appear on Herlarious for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network. Named one of Time Out New York’s “21 New York Comedy Scene Linchpins,” Keith Robinson was a regular on Comedy Central’s Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, has appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and starred in his own Comedy Central stand-up special. NOTE: Due to language and adult content, this show is suitable for mature audiences only. An ambitiously creative musician who frequently collaborates with artists in film and dance, pianist Jason Moran is jazz’s wild card, a probing conceptualist who transforms everything he touches into a bracingly contemporary statement. Winner of numerous awards and honors, including a coveted MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2010, the 37-year-old pianist has developed at an exponential rate in the company of his supremely flexible quartet the Bandwagon, honing an approach that soaks up influences and reconfigures them to suit his own exacting needs. As a Resident Artistic Director, the multi-faceted Moran is performing in a wide-ranging array of settings.
