$56 Million Moscone Center Renovations Completed on May 15, 2012
San Francisco’s Moscone Center has emerged from a two-year, $56 million renovation of the North and South buildings with a combined 1.2 million square feet of function space and a number of upgrades that were customer-driven. “Our very first step was to ask our customers what changes they’d like to see. The point of this whole project was to meet their needs and exceed their expectations,” said Joe D’Alessandro, president and CEO of the San Francisco Travel Association. The renovation was funded by a public/private partnership with the San Francisco Travel Association, the City and County of San Francisco, and the San Francisco Tourism Improvement District (SFTID). Moscone is now replete with design elements that link the interior of the building with its site in the heart of one of the world’s most iconic cities. Designers accessed everything from the international orange of the Golden Gate Bridge to the aquatic blue of the San Francisco Bay for the color pallet. Thirty-seven graphics depicting San Francisco and the Bay Area’s beautiful natural setting were installed on the walls throughout Moscone North and South. The buildings have also been transformed with new carpet, paint, lighting and ceilings; restroom renovations; upgraded lobbies and kitchens, and significant infrastructure projects including major upgrades to HVAC systems, elevators and escalators. And what isn’t visible may be the biggest hit of all with future convention attendees: a $4.5 million wireless system that can provide high speed service to as many as 60,000 devices at one time. Attendees using Google Maps “My Location” feature will also be able to find their way more easily to meeting rooms, food services, restrooms and more in the building. Golden State Warriors Announce Plan to Build Arena on San Francisco Waterfront by 2017
On May 22, 2012 San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee announced that the Golden State Warriors, whose home court is currently Oakland, plan to build a new sports and entertainment arena on the San Francisco waterfront at Pier 30-32 in time for the 2017-18 National Basketball Association (NBA) season. According to Warriors Co-Executive Chairman and CEO Joe Lacob, the arena will be privately financed. The new arena will also provide a spectacular new venue for top-tier concerts, cultural events and conventions. Under the agreement, the City of San Francisco will provide the land and the Warriors will pay to repair the piers and privately finance the arena project; the cost of repairs is estimated at $75 to $100 million. San Francisco Visitor Information Center Returns to Hallidie Plaza Location July 23, 2012
After an extensive remodeling of San Francisco’s Visitor Information Center, located at Powell and Market streets on the lower level of Hallidie Plaza, it reopened on July 23, 2012. The new center will still feature a “high touch” experience, something that the VIC is noted for; however, visitors now have access to interactive screens at the rear of the center and staff is “dealing” information from casino-style tables at two locations in the 5,000-square-foot location. Gensler is the architect of record for the remodeling and all construction was completed by Webcor. The center has been located at Hallidie Plaza since Aug. 6, 1976. “The staff and the volunteers at the Visitor Information Center are curators of the San Francisco experience, providing one-on-one interaction with visitors from around the world while providing impeccable service in 14 different languages,” noted Chris Clark, vice president, Integrated Marketing Services. San Francisco’s New Pier 27 Cruise Terminal “Tops Out”
Construction on Schedule for 34th America’s Cup Village in 2013 On July 18, 2012 San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee joined the Port of San Francisco, Department of Public Works, Turner Construction and the maritime community to celebrate the “topping out” of the Pier 27 Cruise Terminal project. The traditional topping out ceremony signifies the half-way mark of a construction project, and is demonstrated by the hoisting of the final steel beam into place at the top of the building being built. The Port is building the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal at Pier 27 over an approximate one-year period. The new terminal building will be used first as the venue for the 34th America’s Cup Village in 2013. After the America’s Cup event, the Port will complete the cruise terminal in 2014 to make it operational for cruise ships, and create a new 2.5 acre public park known as the Northeast Wharf Plaza. The entire project, which will be completed in two phases, is estimated to cost $90 million.
The new cruise terminal will accommodate vessels up to 1,200 feet long, carrying 2,600 passengers, and has the capacity at key areas to allow it to service vessels carrying as many as 5,000 passengers. San Francisco’s Outdoor Marketplaces Turn 40; Street Artists Offer “One-of-a-Kind” Handicrafts
Now there’s street food, but four decades ago there were street artists pioneering curbside commerce. Inaugurated in 1972, San Francisco’s Street Artist Licensing Program, under the direction of the San Francisco Arts Commission, has nurtured talented artists by licensing them to sell their work. Jewelry, photography, sculpture, apparel, leather craft and blown glasswork are among the one-of-a-kind, made-in-the-U.S. handicrafts sold on the city’s bustling streets. Some 30 selling areas, primarily downtown and on Fisherman’s Wharf, are available to the artists. Of the approximately 400 artists who participate in the program, an estimated 55 percent live in the city. New METREON Opens First Phase of Transformation, CityTarget Opening in October
In March 2012 Westfield opened the first venues at the new METREON, 135 Fourth St., as part of the initial phase of improvements at the downtown San Francisco destination for dining, shopping, entertainment and special events. The improvements offer expansive views of Yerba Buena Gardens, a new dining terrace, eateries, shops and renovated AMC theaters and City View event space. METREON’s transformation will be complete with the opening of CityTarget, the city’s first Target store.
Oct. 12-13, 2012 marks the long-awaited arrival of CityTarget to San Francisco. Golden Gate Bridge Celebrates 75th Anniversary in 2012 with “75 Tributes” Spanning the Year
May 27, 2012 marked 75 years for the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay Area celebrated with gusto the history, beauty and ingenuity of this famous span. Bridge officials estimate that more than 200,000 people attended the Golden Gate Festival on May 27 and some 500,000 spectators witnessed the fireworks that closed the festival on the evening of May 27. Activities and special commemorative events will continue throughout the remainder of the year and the visitor experience on the south end of the bridge has been completely redesigned. Improvements to the site include:
- New 3,500-square-foot Bridge Pavilion to welcome visitors, house celebratory merchandise and display interpretive exhibits
- Conversion of the iconic Round House from a gift shop to a space for visitor and education programs
- Revitalization of the bridge plaza to serve as a gathering and orientation space
- Restoration of trails and scenic vistas
- A “green screen” photo area where visitors can picture themselves in locations not accessible to the general public such as the top of the tower or climbing the cables
- New, personally guided, 45-minute (day) and 60-minute (evening) bridge tours utilizing the latest in audio technology spring through fall
- Completion of a dramatic new Golden Gate Overlook on the southwest side of the bridge

San Francisco Hosts America’s Cup World Series Races
Aug. 21-26 and Oct. 2-7, 2012, and the 34th America’s Cup in Fall 2013
The 161-year-old America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport and has evolved into one of the world’s leading sporting competitions featuring the best sailors on the world’s fastest boats — the wing-sailed AC45 and AC72 catamarans.
The 34th America's Cup is an umbrella term that covers several events - the AC World Series, the Louis Vuitton Cup (America's Cup Challenger Series), the Red Bull Youth America's Cup and the America's Cup Finals in 2013:
- The America’s Cup World Series is a professional circuit that brings America’s Cup-level racing and the America’s Cup experience to top international venues. There are two seasons of the AC World Series. The 2011-12 AC World Series concluded on July 1, 2012 in Newport, R.I. The 2012-13 AC World Series opens in San Francisco Aug. 21-26 and Oct. 2-7, 2012 as well as other international ports before concluding on May 19, 2013, prior to the beginning of the 34th America’s Cup events in San Francisco in July 2013. Countries currently represented in the AC World Series races include competitors from France, Italy, Korea, New Zealand, Sweden, the United Kingdom and ORACLE TEAM USA.
- Louis Vuitton Cup, the America’s Cup Challenger Series, is used to determine who will race the Defender in the America’s Cup Finals. Scheduled for July 4-Sept. 1, 2013 on San Francisco Bay, the Louis Vuitton Cup will draw challengers from around the world for the opportunity to compete for the America’s Cup; 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the Louis Vuitton Cup, first held in Newport, R.I. in 1983. Teams officially registered as challengers for the Louis Vuitton Cup are Emirates Team New Zealand, Artemis Racing (Sweden), Luna Rossa Challenge (Italy),Team Korea and defender ORACLE TEAM USA. The entry deadline is Aug. 1, 2013.
- The America’s Cup Finals will take place Sept. 7-22, 2013 in San Francisco Bay and will pit the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup against the Cup’s defender – ORACLE TEAM USA. The events will be sailed in the cutting-edge AC72 wing-sailed catamarans, the next generation America’s Cup boats that are 131-feet tall, 72-feet long and are capable of speeds of more than 35 mph.
- Dates for the recently announced Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, open to national teams of sailors ages 19-23, are yet to be confirmed, but expected to be in August/September 2013, in the heart of the AC34 racing season.
Construction has begun at Pier 27 which will serve as the heart of the spectator village for AC34 and is slated to be completed by February 2013. The AC Village will feature an amphitheater for 10,000 fans, entertainment including live music and dance, exhibitions of past America’s Cup winners, and other exciting activities.

Hilton San Francisco Union Square Completes $53 Million Transformation June 2012
The Hilton San Francisco Union Square, 333 O’Farrell St., has completed a $53 million project that transformed 550 guest rooms and function space. The project, completed in June 2012, incorporates 21st century design features to reinforce the hotel’s positioning as the city’s premier hotel and conference venue. The renovation is part of a three-year, $3 billion plan of significant property renovations currently underway across the global portfolio of Hilton Hotels & Resorts, the flagship brand of Hilton Worldwide. Major improvements designed to enhance the guest experience include the addition of a second window to improve views of the city and sound-proofing. The guest rooms also feature new furniture, soft goods, refrigerators and wired and wireless high-speed Internet service. The hotel’s 20,000-square-foot Continental Ballroom and 31 of the additional meeting rooms (ranging in size from 430 to 1,090 square feet) have been expanded and updated with contemporary design features. Kimpton’s Hotel Triton Debuts New Look June 2012
Kimpton’s 144-room Hotel Triton, 342 Grant Ave., has been given a makeover steeped in San Francisco’s literary tradition and Beat era heritage. Quotes from author Jack Kerouac are featured on the wallpaper and guests may also browse through editions of Kerouac’s “On the Road” or Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl” found on the bedside table. Crimson dragons tattoed on the guest room walls pay homage to the hotel’s location just steps from the dragon-adorned gateway to Chinatown. Hotel Adagio’s Multi-Million Dollar Transformation Completed July 2012
A multi-million dollar transformation of the 171-room Hotel Adagio, 550 Geary St. in Union Square, was completed in July 2012. A Temporary Offering, a Pop-Up Collaboration of Local Businesses
The Kor Group (Kor) has been bringing new life to San Francisco’s mid-Market district since June 2012 with A Temporary Offering (ATO), a new pop-up concept that integrates virtually an entire city block and creates an urban destination on the ground floor of Kor’s newly acquired Renoir Hotel, 45 McAllister St. ATO consists of three carefully curated venues:

SHN Upcoming Shows Include “War Horse,” “The Lion King” and “The Book of Mormon”

San Francisco Symphony Enters Second 100 Years Sept. 5, 2012
The San Francisco Symphony’s 101st season opens Sept. 5, 2012 with two weeks of concerts of Russian and German masterworks led by conductor Semyon Bychkov. Joining Bychkov and the Orchestra is violinist Pinchas Zukerman. The second week of concerts, beginning Sept.12, is devoted to performances of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7, “Leningrad.” In its Opening Gala concert on Sept.19, Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas leads violinist Joshua Bell and the Orchestra in Saint-Saëns’s Introduction and Rondo capriccioso and Chausson’s “Poème,” selections from Berlioz’s “Romeo and Juliet,” and Ravel’s “Boléro.”The orchestra’s 101st season highlights include explorations of music by Beethoven, Stravinsky and enhanced concert experiences around Grieg’s “Peer Gynt” and Beethoven’s “Missa solemnis” by Thomas. He will also conduct the SFS in the first concert performances by an orchestra of Leonard Bernstein’s complete “West Side Story.” The orchestra will perform two world premieres, three U.S. premieres, three West Coast premieres and 13 San Francisco Symphony premieres and also inaugurates the new Bing Concert Hall at Stanford University in January 2013. Teatro ZinZanni Reopens in 2013 After Southern California Road Show
After more than 11 years, 800,000 visitors, hundreds of guest artists and 40 different shows, Teatro ZinZanni shuttered the fabled Palais Nostalgique Spiegeltent on Pier 29 after its 2011 New Year’s Eve show, Dec. 31, 2011. Teatro’s former home on Piers 27 and 29 is scheduled to be a part of the upcoming America’s Cup. On Dec. 6, 2011 Teatro ZinZanni announced that they will build a new permanent home on the Embarcadero. The new site is a triangular parcel, located where Broadway and Davis meet the Embarcadero. Yoshi’s Celebrates 40th Anniversary with New Concert Performances August-September 2012
This summer Yoshi’s Jazz Club and Japanese Restaurant will celebrate its 40th anniversary with milestone concert performances August-September 2012. Among those returning for anniversary concerts are Joey DeFrancesco, Larry Coryell, Jimmy Cobb, the Jazz Crusaders, Chick Corea and Ravi Coltrane. Presently regarded as one of the country’s premier jazz clubs, the music scene at Yoshi’s had a humble start. Opening its doors in 1972 as a 25-seat Japanese restaurant near the U.C.-Berkeley campus it outgrew that space and in 1977 the owners Yoshie Akiba, her husband Kaz Kajimura, and chef Hiroyuki Hori converted a former laundromat in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood into a 100-seat restaurant. “Now that we have a Japanese restaurant going, what’s next?” owner Kajimura recalls asking himself. The answer was the addition of a full bar and lounge with live music and then a two-story addition which was called “Upstairs at Yoshi’s.” What began as a side project to offer diners live music quietly developed into a proving ground for the finest musicians from around the Bay Area. The music performances became such a draw that in 1985 Yoshi’s expanded again and added an adjacent nightclub, ultimately named Yoshi’s Nitespot. In 1997, Yoshi's was invited by the Port of Oakland to relocate to Jack London Square as part of a plan to revitalize the area. Yoshi’s San Francisco opened in 2007 in the Fillmore Heritage Center, 1330 Fillmore St. Approaching its five-year anniversary this November, Yoshi's San Francisco has expanded beyond jazz. Dubbed fashion’s enfant terrible, Jean Paul Gaultier launched his first prêt-à-porter collection in 1976 and founded his own couture house in 1997. This dynamic, multimedia exhibition includes 120 haute couture and prêt-à-porter designs created between the early 1970s and 2010, along with numerous sketches, archival documents, fashion photographs, and video clips that spotlight Gaultier’s collaborations with filmmakers, choreographers and musicians, most notably Madonna. For this presentation, Gaultier partnered with the Montreal-based theater company Ubu Compagnie de Création in the design of 30 animated mannequins who talk and sing.

Nureyev: A Life in Dance

The de Young will be the first venue in the American tour of paintings from the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis, The Hague. The exhibition features 35 paintings representing 17th-century painting in the Dutch Republic. Asian Art Museum Showcases “Phantoms of Asia” through Sept. 2, 2012
The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, 200 Larkin St., presents “Phantoms of Asia: Contemporary Awakens the Past,” the first large scale exhibition of contemporary art organized by the museum through Sept. 2, 2012. To set this foray into contemporary art into context, Director Dr. Jay Xu noted that “when art was first made, it was all ‘contemporary’ art.” “Phantoms” explores cross-cultural Asian perspectives of spirituality and the cosmos through a compelling interplay of 140 artworks from the present (60 works by 31 contemporary artists) and past (80 objects—some 2,000 years old—from the museum's renowned collection). Together, the artworks invite visitors to view traditional objects not as relics of the past, but as vibrant connections to the present. All public spaces and galleries within the museum include elements of the exhibition, providing visitors an immersive experience. Contemporary Jewish Museum Extends “Do Not Destroy: Trees, Art and Jewish Thought” through Sept. 9, 2012
Inspired by the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shevat, the New Year of the Trees, this three-part show at the Contemporary Jewish Museum, 736 Mission St., which opened in February, has been extended through Sept. 9, 2012. Part One of the exhibition, The Dorothy Saxe Invitational, builds upon the museum’s long-standing tradition of asking artists from a variety of backgrounds to explore a Jewish ceremonial object, holiday or concept. More than 50 artists across the U.S. created new works of art in response to this year’s invitation. Part Two: “An International Survey of Trees in Contemporary Art” is a selection of more than 20 works by international artists who have examined the tree — conceptually or formally — in their work. Part three of the exhibition is a site-specific piece in Jessie Square by Rebar using recycled lumber to create a group of brightly colored gem-shaped planters. Museum of the African Diaspora Exhibition Features Nine Influential Bay Area Artists through Sept. 23, 2012
“Choose Paint! Choose Abstraction!,” celebrating Bay Area abstract artists, launches the Museum of the African Diaspora’s (MoAD) Curator’s Choice exhibition series by featuring nine influential Bay Area artists. Over several decades starting in the 1970s, they consistently chose abstraction over figuration as their preferred approach to art-making. SFMOMA Announces Extensive Off-Site Programming Beginning Summer 2013
As part of the next phase of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s expansion plans which will double its gallery and exhibition space, the museum has announced plans to mount an array of collaborative and traveling museum exhibitions, site-specific installations and neighborhood festivals that will take place throughout the Bay Area during the construction of its new building, which will begin in summer 2013. The building is slated for completion in early 2016. Instead of relocating to a temporary space during the time leading up to the opening of the new building, SFMOMA is using the time to experiment, engage with new cultural partners and create innovative ways for audiences to experience its collection. Beginning in June 2013, SFMOMA will co-present major exhibitions at partner museums featuring works drawn entirely or in part from SFMOMA’s holdings. Highlights include an exhibition at the Contemporary Jewish Museum, a presentation at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and an exhibition at the Asian Art Museum.
Additional projects include:
- a multi-location exhibition of Doug Aitken's “Empire” trilogy (2008–14), which will present all three video installations simultaneously for the first time.
- a commissioned outdoor pavilion showcasing work by Los Angeles–based architect Greg Lynn, which will serve as a floating venue for museum programming along San Francisco's waterfront during the America's Cup races in 2013.

“Stage Presence: Theatricality in Art and Media”
Exploring the blurry line between the fine arts and the performing arts, this exhibition presents works in various media from the past three decades that respond to and embrace theatricality in contemporary art practice. Works include Janet Cardiff’s “The Telephone Call,” a participatory project in which visitors can check out a video camera and follow a self-guided narrative through the museum; Guy Ben-Ner’s “Stealing Beauty” video, which shows the artist and his family in IKEA model rooms; and a new project from Bay Area–based artist Tucker Nichols, commissioned by SFMOMA for the exhibition’s in-gallery cinema and performance space. Also in the exhibition are seminal historic works by Charles Atlas, James Coleman, General Idea and Steve McQueen, as well as more recent works by Sharon Hayes, Craigie Horsfield and Mika Tajima, among others. The exhibition is organized in conjunction with the 2012 ZERO1 Biennial.

“Six Lines of Flight: Shifting Geographies in Contemporary Art”
An international group exhibition, “Six Lines of Flight” features key artists from six cities around the world who have developed unique artistic organizations and/or collectives, contributed to their own communities, and helped each city become a burgeoning art center. The cities include Beirut, Lebanon; Cali, Colombia; Cluj, Romania; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; San Francisco and Tangier, Morocco—places that, like San Francisco, are not considered primary artistic centers but act as critical cross-cultural platforms for those living and working there. Cultivating an awareness of their collective, international contingency is a primary motivation underlying the exhibition.
“Jasper Johns: Seeing with the Mind's Eye”

A remarkably strong relationship has developed over the past 40 years between artist Jasper Johns and various museums and private collectors in the San Francisco Bay Area. Johns’s painting Land’s End (1963 is a cornerstone post-war work in the museum’s collection. In 1978, SFMOMA presented a major survey of Johns’s career, and in 2000 organized “Jasper Johns: New Paintings and Works on Paper,”which traveled nationally. Continuing SFMOMA’s significant involvement with the artist, this exhibition brings together for the first time works from Bay Area collections both public and private, and will be supplemented with key works in the Johns’s own collection.

The Walt Disney Family Museum, The Presidio of San Francisco, 104 Montgomery St., will present a special exhibition “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The Creation of a Classic” celebrating Walt Disney’s first feature-length animated film Nov. 15, 2012-April 14, 2013. The exhibition celebrates Walt Disney’s vision and the artistry of his dedicated staff, illustrating how they shaped and defined an entirely new American art form through their creation of this groundbreaking film. Guided by the vision of a master storyteller, 32 animators, 1032 assistants, 107 in-betweeners, 10 layout artists, 25 background artists, 65 special effects animators and 158 inkers and painters and countless production staff came together to create the masterpiece. The exhibition features more than 200 works of art including conceptual drawings, early character studies, detailed story sketches and animation drawings. Also featured are delicate thumbnail layout watercolors, meticulously rendered pencil layouts, rare watercolor backgrounds, colorful cels and vintage posters all illustrating how Walt Disney advanced the creation of an entirely new art form. China’s Terracotta Warriors Return to San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum Feb. 22-May 27, 2013
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Asian Art Museum in its Civic Center location, “China’s Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor’s Legacy” will be on view Feb. 22-May 27, 2013. Featuring 120 rare objects, including 10 terracotta figures, from one of the greatest archaeological discoveries in recent history, the exhibition will take visitors on a journey from the birth and rise of the Qin Empire to the life and rule of the First Emperor, his quest for immortality, his death, burial and complex legacy. Scow Schooner Alma Returns to San Francisco Bay Continue through Nov. 17, 2012
From now through Nov. 17, 2012 three-hour sailing adventures will be offered by the National Park Service aboard the Alma, an 1891 scow schooner that once hauled cargo around San Francisco Bay. Part of the historic fleet at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, the 60-foot Alma was the flatbed truck of her era. Dazzling views of the bay, stories of San Francisco’s riveting history and tried-and-true sea skills all come together in this unique, hands-on, educational sailing program. Boarding is at 12:30 p.m. at Hyde Street Pier, Hyde and Jefferson streets. San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee has announced the return of the popular Sunday Streets program with a full schedule of car-free events. The Sunday Streets 2012 season which began in March 2012 opens streets to pedestrians, cyclists and people-powered wheels of all kinds by temporarily removing vehicular traffic on select Sundays, transforming street-space usually reserved for cars into recreational space for everyone to safely enjoy. Founded in 2008, Sunday Streets has grown from two events to 10 and creates miles of car-free space on city roads. The American Institute of Architects, San Francisco chapter and the Center for Architecture + Design announce the ninth annual Architecture and the City festival, the nation's largest architectural festival of its kind. Annual Cable Car Bell-Ringing Contest Sept. 6, 2012
The bells will be ringing in San Francisco’s Union Square for the 49th annual cable car bell-ringing contest, a tradition that dates back to 1955 and has its roots in an even earlier competition held in 1949 to select three gripmen to operate a cable car on a short section of track at a railroad fair in Chicago. Every year former bell-ringing champions are invited to the contest which often pairs cable car gripmen with celebrity competitors to show off their skills on the cable car’s hefty brass bell – only fitting to signal the movement of a 15,500- to 16,800-lb. car. All-time champ, Carl Payne won the championship 10 times before joining the San Francisco Police Department. Consumer Products and DC Entertainment, features the tallest inversion west of the Mississippi and ranks alongside the tallest coaster inversions in the world. United Airlines to Add Non-Stop Service to Taipei and Paris Beginning April 2013
United Airlines announced in July 2012 that it will begin daily year-round service between its hub at San Francisco International Airport and Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei beginning April 9, 2013, subject to government approval. The airline will also begin daily year-round service between San Francisco and Charles de Gaulle International Airport in Paris beginning April 11, 2013, also subject to government approval. The new Paris and Taipei services will augment United’s ongoing investment in air service at San Francisco International Airport. San Francisco International Airport Recognized for Excellence
SFO Cited by Skytrax for Four Different Awards and Named Best Airport in the Americas by Frequent Business Traveler
Skytrax, the world’s leading airport and airline review site, recently named San Francisco International Airport’s staff service the best in North America. Skytrax also recognized SFO for having the second best Regional (U.S.) Airport (just behind Cincinnati) and being the third best Airport in North America (Cincinnati and Vancouver, were first and second, respectively). SFO’s Terminal 2 (T2), which opened in 2011, was named the fourth best terminal in the world. T2, the first LEED Gold certified terminal in the United States, was preceded by Heathrow’s new Terminal 5, Changi’s (Singapore) Terminal 3 and the newest terminal at Beijing airport, in that order. The World Airport Survey began in 1999 and “is a leading airport passenger satisfaction benchmark” covering 370 airports in 2011, Skytrax officials said. More than 12 million international passengers participated in the survey. The annual survey “is 100% independent of any airport control or input, and delivers survey accuracy and award impartiality that is unmatched worldwide,” Skytrax noted, adding that the airports are judged on cleanliness, facilities, staff friendliness, amount of queuing etc. The survey also asks for passenger recommendations. In July San Francisco International Airport was also has been named Best Airport in the Americas by the readers of Frequent Business Traveler (www.frequentbusinesstraveler.com), an online publication written for and by affluent frequent business travelers. The Frequent Business Traveler GlobeRunner Awards recognize the world’s best travel companies, including airline, hotel, car rental agencies and travel websites. Award nominations were made by the publication’s editorial team of experienced travel journalists in more than 20 categories. Voting was conducted online from March 1 through May 15, and almost 50,000 votes were cast.
