For travelers visiting San Francisco, and for weekend and day-trip jaunts to San Francisco’s surrounding attractions, Amtrak offers a convenient, scenic and cost-effective mode of transportation. Modernized and refurbished rail cars, new and improved services and newly enhanced amenities add to the fun. Taking Amtrak is also a "green" way to go, because traveling by rail contributes less per passenger mile to greenhouse gas emissions than cars and airplanes. Visitors coming into San Francisco from the North can take the can take the Coast Starlight with daily roundtrips between Vancouver to Emeryville with Thruway service to San Francisco. From South the San Joaquin route offers departures daily by train between Bakersfield and Emeryville with Thruway service to San Francisco. From the East, the California Zephyr offers daily service between Chicago and Sacramento, with transfers available to the Capitol Corridor which offers daily service between the Bay Area and Sacramento.

Train Service To San Francisco
Whether traveling around Northern California for business or pleasure, skip the traffic and parking hassles and take the train. The San Joaquin provides a great way to travel throughout California's Central Valley. The Valley is California's premier agricultural region, bordered on the west by the coastal mountain ranges, and on the east by California's magnificent Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia, and Death Valley National Parks. The San Joaquin runs multiple times daily between the San Francisco Bay Area (or Sacramento) and Bakersfield, with Easy Thruway connections to San Francisco at Emeryville.
Experienced travelers say the California Zephyr is one of the most beautiful train trips in all of North America. As you climb through the heart of the Rockies, and further west through the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas, you may find it hard to disagree. The Zephyr runs daily between Chicago and San Francisco, coursing through the plains of Nebraska to Denver, across the Rockies to Salt Lake City, and then through Reno and Sacramento into Emeryville with Thruway connections to San Francisco
Widely regarded as one of the most spectacular of all train routes, the Coast Starlight links the greatest cities on the West Coast. En route daily between Seattle and Los Angeles, the Coast Starlight passes through Portland, Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area and Santa Barbara.
